This competition collects information about children. We have tried to collect as little as possible, explain plainly what happens to it, and never share it with anyone who does not need it.
When you submit an entry, we collect:
To run the competition: to read and judge each story fairly within the right age band, to contact you about the result, to produce your child's personalised ebook, and, for the ten selected stories, to print and post a paperback. If you asked to hear about future rounds, we also use your email for that, and for nothing else.
We use a small number of specialist services to run the site securely. Each only sees what it needs to do its job.
| Service | What it sees | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Everything you submit | Our database and file storage provider. This is where entries are stored securely |
| Cloudflare Turnstile | Technical details of your browser | Confirms the form was filled in by a person, not a script. Never sees the story or the child's name |
| Stripe | The amount and card, only if you contribute | Processes the optional payment. We never see or store the card itself |
| Resend | Your email address | Sends the confirmation, results, and ebook emails |
If your child's story is one of the ten selected, we also share their first name, last initial, and postal address with our printer and Australia Post, only so the paperback can be printed and posted to your door.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or any service that would use it to market to you outside this competition.
We keep an entry's full details for the round it was entered in, then for a further period of 12 months in case a question arises about that round, after which the personal details are deleted from our systems.
If a story is one of the ten selected, some information stays permanently as part of the published anthology itself: the child's first name, last initial, age band, and hometown. This is unavoidable once a book has been printed and sent to families.
If you asked to hear about future rounds, we keep your email for that purpose until you ask us to stop.
Entries are stored in a private database that only we can read. The website itself cannot show any entry to a visitor, including us, without going through the same secure system every time. Uploaded story files are stored privately and are never given a public address.
We know this form asks for information about a child. We have tried to ask for the minimum that lets us run a fair competition and produce a real book: no more. School and suburb are optional. We do not ask for a home address unless a story is selected and a paperback needs posting.
You can ask us at any time to see what we hold about your child's entry, to correct it, or to delete it. Email kevin.tan@thekitchentablebook.com and we will action this promptly. If a story has already been printed in a published book, we can remove it from any future use, but cannot recall copies already sent to families.
If this policy changes in a way that affects how we handle information already collected, we will email everyone it affects rather than only update this page.
Email kevin.tan@thekitchentablebook.com and we will get back to you.
